The small, picturesque village of Foulkesmill is in County Wexford and lies to the south of the county. In the middle of the 18th century the village held its own races on Foulkesmill Downs which were deemed sufficiently important to be included in the ‘Historical List of Horse Races and Matches in 1761’. The earliest 3 day meeting began on Wednesday 8th July 1761 when the Lord Jocelyn owned Pentioner won the Purse. After a days hunting, there was racing on Friday 10th July when Mr Byrne’s selection won the Purse, while the Ladies Plate was contested on Saturday 11th July with Creeper gaining the upper hand for Mr Conraby. Three years later an extended meeting stretched over 5 days from Tuesday 17th July to Saturday 21st July 1764. The 4 year old race on day one went to Mr Dillon’s Plaze, while Brisk won the Give and Take Handicap for Mr Higgins the next day. The extended meeting closed on Saturday with victory for Mr Gyles’s Screeching Kate who beat White Legs. No further race meetings in the village were widely reported.
